Backpack Inside lists for backpacker's travel

Health Care in a journey

    DEET (diethyltoluamide)

International bacterin injection before go aboard

Jess and Mei:
Jess and Mei:

Festivals and Events in South America in 2008

以下就是我列出來的幾個 events from March to May 2008。

1. Events in Peru:

  • Ica Wine Festival 3/01/2008 - 3/31/2008 (07 Mar 2008 - 16 Mar 2008
Ica, Peru In the Ica Valley, near the coast, conditions are just right for vines, although most of the product goes to the making of pisco, the famous Peruvian grape brandy. Ica celebrates the abundance of the harvest with processions, fairs, music concerts and parties. Everyone joins in with the popular African-influenced dance of the coastal regions, the "festejo". The biggest single event of the festival is the election of the Wine Queen and her hand maidens. The winners of the pageant are required to tread grapes in a large vat. Special feast-time sweets accompanied by a glass or two of pisco also form an integral part of the occasion.

  • Holy Week in Ayacucho, Peru 3/16/2008 - 3/23/2008
Easter week, or "Semana Santa" is celebrated with religious processions in Lima and practically every other town and city of Peru. In the Andean towns, Easter is celebrated with particular fervour and nowhere more so than in Ayacucho. This highland city portrays the passion, death and resurrection of Christ with an incredible intensity, beginning with the arrival of Jesus on a donkey. Images and effigies of the Virgin Mary and Saint John are paraded in processions through streets carpeted with flowers, to meet with the image of Christ on the main square. On Good Friday, a cavalcade begins at dusk, with the images borne in a solemn procession, on biers decorated with white roses. Participants are dressed in mourning attire and carry candles through the darkened streets. The main bier is an inspiring site with thousands of candles. A long sermon follows on the Saturday, while Sunday gives way to more festive celebrations as Christ is resurrected, and carried once more through the streets.

  • Lord of the Earthquakes in Cusco, Peru 3/24/2008 (有的網站是寫 3/17/2008)
Pre-Inca traditions and beliefs mingle with Catholic worship in this popular celebration based on a miracle. In 1650, an oil painting of Christ on the cross is believed to have overcome the terrible destructive power of an earthquake. Since that date, the indigenous local people have paid homage to the image of "Taitacha Temblores", a mixed Quechua and Spanish title meaning Lord of the Earthquakes. Coming at the end of Semana Santa on Easter Monday, this is a colourful event which takes place partly in Cusco Cathedral, built on the site of the Inca creator-god, Viracocha. Here, the smoke-blackened image is kept, to be paraded through the streets wearing a crimson crown of flowers . (Photo from Annual Events in Cusco)

2. Events in Chile:

  • Easter (Semana Santa) Various, Chile 3/16/2008 - 3/23/2008
Semana Santa, or Holy Week, is an important time throughout Latin America, with religious ceremonies and processions taking place throughout the week from Palm Sunday through until Easter Sunday itself. On each day there are specific rituals and processions through the streets. Participants often go on their knees or carry large wooden crosses. In Chile the tradition of "Cuasimodo" extends a week beyond Easter, in popular celebrations that derive from the time when parish priests made their post-Easter rounds accompanied by armed cowboy bodyguards. Also known as "Correr a Cristo", or Running to Christ, the day-long celebration involves a mass, followed by a procession in which the parish priest is drawn in a decorated carriage accompanied by mounted cowboys, bicycles, carts, and crowds of shouting people. The procession careers through the streets stopping only to enjoy copious amounts of food, drink and music.

  • Fiesta de Cuasimodo in Chile 30 Mar 2008 (various dates)
The peculiarly-named popular religious feast-cum-equestrian-display Fiesta de Cuasimodo is celebrated on the Sunday after Easter Sunday throughout many parts of Chile, particularly in urban areas and around Santiago. The basic idea is that knights, dressed in full and colourful attire, gather outside the local church and escort the priest on his tour to give the Eucharist to the infirm and dying throughout the area.

The apparent historical basis of this ritual is that the criminal and the disenfranchised used to assault the priest to steal his ornaments and valuable goodies. An escort of armed knights was necessary to ensure that God's man could perform his sacred duties undisturbed by the criminals (and the poor and starving) of the Earth. Though there is rather less risk of interference these days, the ceremony still takes place with annual regularity, a fond leftover from more colonial times. (photo form Fiesta de Cuasimodo)

  • Celebration of Wine Chile (IV Celebration of Wine in Pirque) 2008 Apr 04, 2008 (Fri) - Apr 06, 2008 (Sun)
Located in the Valley of the High Maipo it looks for to summon thus on 15,000 visitors and to surpass the achieveed successes the previous years.
The direction of the event focuses national and foreign consumers, Tourists, Industralists, companies and to the Vitivinícola industry in general; reason why your participation will be pretty important.
The Celebration emphasis in reinforcing the vision of the commune of Pirque like “the Capital of Wine”, Cradle of Traditions and Vitivinícola Culture. It is by that we invited you to be contributor of this great event that will convocate to the most important vines of the country and foreigners.
The event will take place the days 4, 5 and 6 of next April, in Vicente Huidobro’s park, where the Average Municipal Moon is located that has an extension of 18 hectares and counts full-featured and required services.
Parallelly, related activities in the Pavilion of wine will be made.

3. Events in Blovia:
Festival of the "Gran Poder" La Paz, Bolivia 5/01/2007 - 6/30/2007
The biggest street party in La Paz is a religious festival with a carnival feel. The "Festividad del Senor del Gran Poder", the festival of the All-Powerful, stems from a cult that developed around a painting of the Trinity of the early 17th century. The second person in the painting represents Christ depicted with native features. From the 1930s, street processions began, headed up by an image of a dusky Christ carried on a ceremonial bier. Nowadays the event has a strong folkloric element, with more than 50 "brotherhoods" contributing costumed participants, adopting varied themes such as Incas, conquistadors, colonialists and so on. Thousands of dancers follow the parade, their voluminous skirts twirling along the way. Eating and drinking plays a prominent role in the day's celebrations. Pinning down the date of Gran Poder can be problematic: this is a moveable feast of the people. (Photo from stephanie-sas' photostream)

4. Events in Argentina

  • Buenos Aires Book Fair in Buenos Aires, Argentina 4/16/2007 - 5/07/2007
This is one of the most important cultural and publishing events in Latin America, bringing together publishers, writers, authors, booksellers, distributors, scientists, and teachers from around the world. Indeed, it is the largest fair of its type in the Spanish-speaking world, attracting well over a million readers to its pavilions. Of these, more than 8,000 are book professionals, here to participate in the excellent business opportunity offered by a vast number of national and international titles at the most competitive prices in the market. International meetings, seminars, debates and discussions form an important part of the fair. Subjects from poetry to cooking come within the overall scope, which follows a different theme each year. Activities for children and young adults ensure that the appeal is widened as far as possible. The first four days of the fair are normally reserved for professionals.

  • Buenos Aires Independent International Film Festival 4/01/2008 - 4/30/2008 Buenos Aires, Argentina Argentina - as well as several other countries in Latin America - produces excellent movies, and has done for many years. The fact that they are only recently coming to the attention of wider European audiences owes much to the work of festivals such as this one. The Buenos Aires Independent International Film Festival (BA FICI) is a young, exciting event which has attracted international recognition for its positive programming, concentrating on quality productions with an emphasis on director-driven films. The work of new directors is also highlighted, helping to develop the national output. The festival is competitive, and prizes are awarded in various categories. It also encourages filmmakers and professionals from around the world to participate in workshops and debates.

Go go go, go ahead

How to Choose the Right Backpacking Clothing

How to Choose the Right Backpacking Clothing,文章裡很詳盡的介紹如何準備衣服與相關衣物材質的介紹,貼來與大家分享之 (待我徹底研究與採購完畢後再來寫一篇整裝心得)。

How to Choose the Right Backpacking Clothing
The clothes you bring with you on a backpacking trip must perform 2 important jobs. First, they must protect you from the elements (rain, snow, and wind). Second, they must keep you comfortable during a variety of activities and weather conditions.

The best way to choose backpacking clothing is to build a "system" of clothing layers that can be mixed and matched to handle different trips and different conditions.

Some Basic Definitions

  • Layering
Layering is the practice of dressing in a number of lightweight clothing layers instead of 1 or 2 heavier layers. Layered clothing systems are versatile (you can add or remove layers in response to changing conditions) and efficient (a number of thin layers will be warmer than 1 or 2 thick layers, and they'll take up less room in your pack).

  • Wicking
Certain clothing layers enhance comfort by pulling sweat from the surface of your skin and transferring it into other clothing layers. This process, called wicking, keeps you dry and comfortable in warm conditions. It also keeps you warmer in cold conditions by reducing evaporative and conductive heat loss.

  • Breathability
To stay comfortable when temperatures rise or your activity-level increases, you need clothing layers that let your sweat and body heat escape. A garment's ability to do this is referred to as its breathability. Breathability is affected by the materials that a clothing layer is made out of and the design of the layer itself.

Step #1: Consider the Layers You'll Need

Backpacking clothing can be grouped into 4 basic categories: inner layer, mid layer, insulation layer and outer layer. Each type performs a specific task within a clothing system. Whether or not you need them depends on your backpacking plans.

  • Inner layers
Inner layer clothing is worn right next to your skin. Its job is to keep you comfortable by wicking the sweat from your skin and providing an extra layer of insulation. Inner layer clothing is usually worn in moderate to cold conditions when a little extra insulation is needed and the chance of aerobic activity is high. It's available in a variety of thicknesses for different activities and weather conditions.
  • Mid layers
Mid layer clothing consists of the items you use every day: shorts, T-shirts, lightweight pants and long-sleeve shirts. The primary function of mid-layer clothing is to provide basic insulation and protection in warm conditions. Mid layer items are often worn alone on short trips in good weather conditions. The pieces you choose should be comfortable, lightweight and built to last.
  • Insulation layers
Insulation layer clothing is designed specifically to provide additional warmth. It's typically worn whenever mid layer and/or inner layer pieces are not warm enough for the current conditions. The insulation layers you use should be warm, lightweight and as non-bulky as possible. They should also breathe well to let sweat and body heat escape.
  • Outer layers
The primary job of outer layer clothing (both tops and bottoms) is to protect you from the wind, rain and snow. But it needs to be somewhat breathable as well, to let sweat and body heat escape. Backpackers should always carry protective outer layers.

Step #2: Consider Your Fabric Options

Inner Layers

  • Cotton- Cotton is comfortable when it's dry, but it absorbs sweat and holds it right next to your skin (which can lead to significant heat loss). Cotton also takes a long time to dry, which can cause discomfort. For these reasons, cotton is not recommended for inner layers used in cold conditions.
  • Silk- Silk is an effective wicking and insulating material. It's extremely comfortable and lightweight, but not as durable as the options below. Some silk layers require special care when washing and drying.
  • Polypropylene- One of the very first man-made wicking materials, Polypro wicks sweat away from the skin effectively. Early versions tended to retain odors and become scratchy after repeated washings. Newer Polypro fabrics have overcome these difficulties.
  • MTS 2® (Moisture Transport System) - MTS 2 is a durable, reliable polyester-based fabric that wicks sweat like polypropylene--without its drawbacks. It's comfortable like cotton, and it's available in a variety of "weights" for different conditions.
  • Capilene® - Capilene is another comfortable, reliable polyester-based wicking fabric. It performs like MTS 2®, with a special chemical treatment to help spread sweat throughout the fabric so that it evaporates quickly.

Mid Layers

  • Cotton- Cotton is a common choice for warm-weather backpacking clothing. It's comfortable, lightweight and it keeps you cool. Cotton is best for warm weather uses because it takes a long time to dry and is an ineffective insulator.
  • Nylon- Lightweight, durable and (generally) non-absorbent, nylon is great for backpacking shorts, pants and shirts. It is available in a variety of styles, for both warm and cold weather uses. Most modern nylons are soft and comfortable against your skin.
  • Wicking materials- Some backpackers wear wicking inner layers like MTS 2® and Capilene® as mid layers. Why not? These layers help you keep dry and comfortable and they provide good insulation.
  • Wool- A great natural insulator, wool is perfect for moderate- to cold-weather backpacking clothes. It's available in full-sleeve shirts, pants, over-shirts, sweaters, jackets and more. Wool insulates well when wet but it can be somewhat scratchy and/or bulky.

Insulation Layers

  • Wool- Wool is a great natural insulator. It's available in knickers, pants, long-sleeve shirts, pullovers, sweaters and jackets. It insulates when wet but can take a long time to dry. Can be heavy/bulky.
  • Pile/Fleece- These popular man-made insulation materials are available in a wide variety of styles and thicknesses. They are comfortable, warm (even when wet), fast drying and lightweight (half as heavy as wool). Pile/fleece products are available in shirts, pants, vests, jackets, pullovers and sweaters. Traditionally, pile/fleece layers have provided only minimal protection from the wind. But new pile/fleece garments are available today with wind- and weather-stopping liners built right in.

Outer Layers
Outer layer clothing can be divided into 3 basic categories (see below). Each has it's own set of characteristics, and each protects backpackers from precipitation, wind and sweat build-up to different degrees. To choose the right outer layer clothing, focus on the general category that sounds best for your needs. Then consider the design features listed at the end of this section to choose a specific model.

  • Water-resistant/breathable fabrics(e.g., REI Windpack outerwear)
-- Positives:These repel wind and light precipitation while providing excellent breathability. They tend to be less expensive than other options.
-- Negatives:They are not waterproof enough to protect you in harsh weather conditions or extended periods of rain.
-- Typical Uses- Water-resistant/breathable fabrics are perfect for backpackers who travel in arid and/or warm conditions where good breathability is important and the chance of heavy precipitation is low. They are popular among backpackers who plan short trips in good weather and those who enjoy strenuous activities like trail running.
  • Waterproof/Non-Breathable Fabrics(e.g., Columbia Sportswear Ibex rainwear)
-- Positives:These are completely waterproof, and they're less expensive than waterproof/breathable fabrics.
-- Negatives:They provide very little breathability, which can be extremely uncomfortable it's hot or if you're working hard on the trail. To let moisture out, layers using waterproof/non-breathable fabrics have to be cut extremely loose (like ponchos) or they must have special vents or openings built in to let the heat and sweat out.
-- Typical Uses- Because of the lack of breathability, most backpackers stay away from waterproof/non-breathable outer layers (unless temperatures are very low or the chances of heavy precipitation are very high). They are used occasionally in moderate conditions in inexpensive rain pants and emergency ponchos.
  • Waterproof/Breathable Fabrics(e.g., REI Elements®, Gore-Tex®)
-- Positives:These fabrics are both waterproof and breathable (to a degree). They are good performers in a wide range of weather conditions.
-- Negatives:Even waterproof/breathable fabrics heat up and trap sweat during strenuous backpacking. Exact performance depends on the specific type of fabric used, the outside temperature, the amount of activity and other factors. Waterproof/breathable fabrics are more expensive than other types of outerwear.
-- Typical Uses- More and more wilderness enthusiasts are choosing waterproof/breathable fabrics for their outer layers. These fabrics are comfortable in a wide variety of situations and conditions. And performance levels keep improving all the time.

A Note on Outer Layer Design
There is more to choosing the right outer layers than just deciding on a type of fabric to use. You must also consider the designs features included in different jacket and pant models. When you start comparing different styles head-to-head, consider the following:

  • Fit- Outer layers should be roomy enough to fit over your clothing layers but snug enough to cinch down tight in nasty conditions. They should also allow for a full range of motion.
  • Access- Full-zip jackets and full-zip pants are easier to get in and out of than pullover tops or pull-on pants. However, more zippers mean a higher chance of leaks.
  • Specific Features- Specific features can have a significant effect on an outer layer's performance and comfort:
    --Adjustable Openings
The waist, cuffs and neck should seal tight for bad weather but open easily for extra ventilation.
  • Vents- Vents enhance breathability no matter what type of fabric an outer layer is made of. Larger vents are typically more effective than small ones, but they may leak more. Typical vents include under-arm zips, side zips, mesh-lined pockets and draft flaps.
  • Pockets- The more pockets an outer layer has, the easier it will be for you to store essential gear items. But keep in mind that pockets increase the weight of the layer. Pockets should be easy to reach, easy to open and close, and well-protected against leaks.
  • Hoods- Any outer layer top you use for backpacking should have a hood to keep your head dry. Integral (permanently attached) hoods offer the best resistance against leaks. Hoods that can be rolled up and/or folded away when not in use are easier to deal with in changing conditions.
  • Storm Flaps- Storm flaps cover zippers, pockets and other openings to protect against leaks. They are commonly found on front zippers, under-arm zips and external pockets.
  • Sealed Seams- Sealed seams are a must for any waterproof outer layer. They're not necessary for water-resistant ones.

Brazil Starts Issuing the Visa Application to Taiwanese again

Mei said「雖然目前不打算去巴西了,不過能恢復簽證的辦理,也是好事一樁,畢竟有機會也是要去看看嘉年華,跟新世界七大奇蹟之一的里約熱內盧基督像呀~~」

ttp://udn.com/NEWS/NATIONAL/NAT5/4194197.shtml

Fifty dead in shock Bolivian flood
By Andrew Enever in La Paz

La Paz was in sombre mood the morning after the terrible storm which in a matter of hours devastated the city, leaving over 50 dead.
The streets were unusually empty as people began counting the cost of the flood which ripped up streets, brought buildings crashing down and filled city centre subways with water, hail and mud.
La Paz´s main street, El Prado, was transformed into a fast-moving river, dragging people and vehicles along with it
The number of confirmed casualties has risen throughout the day as bodies are found under collapsed buildings, buried in cars and washed up on the banks of the river to the south of the city.

As well as the more than 50 confirmed deaths, there are over 100 people still not accounted for.
In addition, 150 people are receiving treatment in city hospitals, many for serious fractures after they were smashed into cars, trees and lamp-posts by the water.
Shock

The downpour of hail and rain, unlike any previously seen in Bolivia´s administrative capital, began at 1500 on Tuesday.

Within an hour, an immense amount of water running down from the poor neighbourhoods high up to the north, east and west of the city was funnelled into the centre of the valley.
La Paz´s main street, El Prado, was transformed into a fast-moving river, dragging people and vehicles along with it.

Passers-by had to climb trees to escape the raging torrents.
Five people were killed when a tunnel under the main street was filled with water and hail reaching depths of three metres.

Calle Mercado, a side street next to the tunnel, was also devastated during 10 minutes of terror, as people were washed down the street and buildings collapsed on top of those within.

Devastation

Estaban Ramos, owner of a small photocopying shop in the street saw his business destroyed in a matter of seconds as the fast-moving water rose above the level of ground-floor doors.

He, his wife and two young children fortunately escaped to the top floor of a neighbouring building, but others were not so lucky
Herman Marquez, owner of a restaurant on the same street, saw two women killed as they jumped from a first-floor window trying to escape a collapsing building only to be swept away by the deadly waters.

Another volunteer told me that work was going on to recover the bodies of two people who were trapped under a collapsed restaurant.

In another part of the city, water burst through a drain in the courtyard of a house, flooding the ground floor, parts of which collapsed.

A woman in the house was buried up to her chest in hail but was rescued.
As the water poured out of the front door it knocked over a 3m-high wall and flooded a car park burying over 25 vehicles.

Relief effort

Teams of volunteers joined the emergency services in the central area to help clear the mess of rocks and hail, while shop owners scrabbled around trying to recover the last undamaged items from their properties.

Wooden beams were in place to prop up the façade of buildings whose insides were nothing more than a huge pile of rubble.

City resources have been stretched to the limit as fire brigade, police and army try to attend to the many disaster areas.

President Jorge Quiroga has declared a state of emergency and the mayor of La Paz has committed all his staff to the emergency efforts in the streets.

Apart from the tragic deaths and injuries, the floods have left economic devastation for thousands of Bolivians whose shops, restaurants and street stalls were destroyed.
Official estimates state that damages exceed $60m.

Wilma Vargas Urquieta wept tears of despair as she told me how her small high street pharmacy was flooded.

"I have lost everything," she said.

In the Rodriguez fruit market, one seller was washed away to her death as she tried desperately to prevent the loss of her produce.

The official death toll continues to rise as in the centre more bodies are pulled from the rubble and to the south of the city villagers in Valencia and Rio Bajo carry out the grim task of pulling bodies from the river.

Twelve dead have been recovered in these two places with reports stating that other bodies were travelling too fast to be stopped.
Twenty-four hour emergency efforts are expected to continue for some time with Mayor Juan Del Granado stating that it will take 2,000 government workers 10 days before the city can return to order.

Granado also made new appeals for food and clothes for victims and volunteers to help with the clear-up.

Peru workers strike traps 100s of tourists
Saturday, February 23, 2008 06:05 [IST]
Lima: Hundreds of tourists were trapped near the ancient Incan city of Machu Picchu as a workers strike against private development entered its second day and paralyzed Cuzco's airport, transportation officials have said.

"We deplore this inconvenience which can interfere with passenger travel and tourism but we think it would be worse to open the airport under these conditions," said Deputy Transportation Minister Carlos Puga yesterday.

The airport at Cuzco, the staging city for travel to the mountain-top citadel, was expected to reopen today, unless the demonstrations continued, Puga said.

The Cuzco regional workers federation called Thursday for workers to block key roads in the city for 48 hours, forcing the shutdown also of rail access to Machu Picchu, Peru s leading tourist attraction.

Around 500 protesters yesterday blocked streets and access roads in Cuzco as part of the demonstrations, called against a new law which would permit private firms to set up shop in the areas close to Peru's archaeological sites.

Protesters branded the law an "affront to the heritage" of the country.

However, some tourists were able Friday to visit Machu Picchu, a 15th century site atop an Andes mountain peak 2,500 meters high and which attracts some 800,000 tourists a year, most of whom travel there by train. The city was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.

Peru: Cusco riot / protest to end today, Velasco Astete Airport could open tomorrow
Transportation 22 February, 2008 [ 11:15 ]

(LIP-ir) -- After Cusco's 48-hour strike ends Friday evening, flights to the Imperial City will resume once again on Saturday morning, said Carlos Puga, the vice minister of transportation and communication.

The Peruvian Corporation of Airports and Commercial Aviation (CORPAC) closed Velasco Astete Airport at 10 a.m. on February 21 because of violent protests that were taking place in the region.

In an effort to keep passengers safe, airport authorities closed the airport just before protesters surrounded it.

"It is likely that if protests don't stop then the airport will not reopen. We are sorry for the inconvenience this may cause passengers and tourists, but we believe it would be worse if we opened the airport under these circumstances", said the vice minister.

Approximately 500 police officers are guarding the airport to make sure it is not overrun by violent protesters, said Peruvian police colonel Alfonso Chavarri.

The officers were sent from Lima and guarded the airport on Thursday as students and construction workers attempted to take control of it.

Police used tear gas to drive protesters away, who had completely surrounded the airport and tried to get onto the property by making a hole on one of the airport's outside walls.

Upon realizing they could not get into the airport, protesters made their way to the city and had several encounters with Peru's national police.

The majority of Cusco's main roads are completely blocked in some cases protesters are charging those that want to use the road.

Peru: Strike in Cusco - Private hotel investment law rejected
Peru 7 February, 2008 [ 12:15 ]

(LIP-ir) -- Upon the announcement that people in Cusco would take part in a 24-hour strike on Thursday, Peru's Minster of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Mercedes Araoz, stated she lamented that a law which was to benefit the tourism sector in Cusco had been misinterpreted.

Araoz expressed she was concerned with the way Cusco's people had reacted to the law, which in her opinion, would foster investments in hotels as well as other touristic services that would create jobs and preserve the region's historic monuments.

The law known as the Promoción del Desarrollo Sostenible de Servicios Turísticos en los Bienes Inmuebles Integrantes del Patrimonio Cultural de la Nación has already been voted against in congress and will be voted on again next week.

The law proposes to make it easier for private investors to be awarded concessions - for the construction of hotels - in areas near archaeological sanctuaries and Cusco's historic downtown.

Even though the new law was voted against, Hugo Gonzalez, the regional president of Cusco, announced that a 24-hour strike would begin on Thursday.

Gonzalez explained the strike would be held to make sure the law was rejected once again.

Tourists will not be able to reach Machu Picchu by train on Thursday because of the strike, announced PeruRail. Representatives reported the service had been canceled for that day for safety reasons.

Will I travel alone in South America

So we are in the process of this grand tour.

Is it safe to travel in South America

2008 Final Travel Schedule in South America

A trial to go or not to go S.America
